The STARGÅTE
[/size][/i][/b]Gadget Name: Stargate
Diameter: 6.7 meters
Weight: 24 tons
Description:
The Stargates are scattered around the galaxy creating a vast network called the Stargate Network. They are composed of a super-heavy metal known as naquadah, which allows them to act as a giant superconductor. They are operated by either a remote dialer, such as in an Ancient Gateship, or by a nearby Dialing Device.
The Dialing devices in the Altera Galaxy are simple-looking flat-topped cones that look like they're made of obsidian. On the top of the cone is a glowing aqua-blue symbol of the Stargate itself. Despite the simple outward appearance, the Dialing Devices of the Altera Galaxy are much more complicated then those of other galaxies like Pegasus and the Milky-Way. When the Stargate symbol pressed, a holographic display is projected, showing three rows of thirteen symbols--each symbol on the gate-- and the Stargate symbol in the top right hand corner of the display, which serves as the 'connect' button after the address is entered. The bottom-right of the address glyphs is different depending on what planet you are on--the point of origin.
To connect to another planet, you dial the six-symbol address for that particular system's Stargate, enter the point of origin, and press the connect button. There are many more functions on these Dialing devices that can be accessed by a menu on the bottom-left corner of the display, but the text is in Ancient. Some of the functions include password-protecting the Dialing Device to prevent someone from dialing out, a map of the galaxy showing where all the Stargates are in the galaxy--and their adresses--, disconnecting the Stargate from the network to prevent someone else from dialing in and also temporarily removing the Gate in question from the other Gates'galaxy maps. To use these functions, you need to be able to read Ancient, or else push random buttons and memorize what you pushed if you end up on a page like the galaxy map. The Dialing Devices also can be opened up from the back when a certain menu command is entered, revealing a port for a ZPM. When a ZPM or another large power source is connected, it overrides the Dialing Devices' internal renewable power supply, and allows the gate to remain open indefinitely, and also enables a shield that covers the event horizon, preventing matter from coming through, but not radio waves.
After dialing the address, the Gate will establish a wormhole connection to the dialed gate on the other end. When matter passes through the puddle-like event horizon of the wormhole, it is broken down and converted into energy, then transferred along the wormhole to the other Gate, and rematerialized. Gate travel is one-way only; any matter trying to travel the wrong way through a gate essentially 'ceases to exist'. Transmissions like radiowaves are capable of travelling both ways, allowing communication from one gate to another without actually stepping through the event horizon.
Unlike Pegasus and Milky-Way galaxy Stargates, The Stargates of the Altera Galaxy are capable of staying open for one hour, though they are capable of staying open indefinitely if connected to a larger power supply, such as a ZPM or close proximity to a black hole--though the latter is not reccomended.

Note: The Gates in this galaxy do not spin like the milky way gates, the sequence is much more like the Pegasus gate, as are the sounds.
Above: Both an active and inactive Altera Stargate. When inactive, the Gate's symbols do not glow, and the Chevrons are less bright.
Above: Stargates in the smaller Vegrandis Beta Galaxy are nearly identical in appearance and connected to the same network, though the menus of the Dialing Devices have several more advanced functions, and are capable of staying open for two and a half hours. Vegrandis Gates also have a barely-noticeable green tint to their event horizons.
